Mayor Ferdon issues statement after tragedy

COLUMBUS, Ind. - On Monday evening, an 11-year-old girl disappeared in the water of East Fork White River in Mill Race Park in Columbus. After more than two days of searching, her body was recovered on Thursday morning. 

Columbus Mayor Mary Ferdon released a message early Thursday afternoon:

"The tragedy at Mill Race Park has been incredibly difficult for the family of the child, first responders, and all of the Columbus community. The City of Columbus extends its deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege to know her.

We must also express how thankful we are for all of our first responders and community partners. The Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Police Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, Columbus Township Fire Department, Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department, and the Department of Natural Resources have been working incredibly long and hard hours to bring closure to the family.

There has been an outpour of support for the first responders and the family, whether it is words of encouragement, the numerous deliveries of food and water, or the donation of spaces to be used during the search, it is greatly appreciated and shows how our community can come together in a time of need.”
